It has been reported that, about two months ago, the Suez Canal Authority began enforcing a prohibition on merchant vessels transiting the Canal with firearms on board. A vessel with weapons is now required to hand them over to Egyptian authorities, who then cause the firearms to be driven to the other end of the Canal, where the guns are returned to the ship.
STCW Convention protocol to be followed to the letter, says Jeffrey Lantz, Director of National and International Standards. DHS provides clarification on a number of issues. The future of MERPAC, other industry advisory committees and U.S. training protocols still remains cloudy.
The Coast Guard Foundation has announced a fundraising drive for its emergency Family Disaster Relief Fund in response to the July 7th helicopter crash that claimed the lives of three servicemen.
The recent change-of-command ceremony at the U.S. Coast Guard signaled more than just a routine change of leadership. ADM Robert J. Papp’s term as Commandant will probably involve much more than that. That’s not necessarily good news for everyone, but it could mean real change within the most visible division within the DHS.
Recently in the Florida Keys, the standing rigging of a 60’ inspected passenger carrying sailing catamaran failed, causing its rotating wing spar mast to collapse. Evidence suggests that the port shroud parted where it exits a swageless mechanical end fitting located on the upper mast at a common shrouds/stay connection. Although there were a number of passengers onboard at the time there were no resultant injuries.
